About

ENTANGLED FREEDOMS is a 5-year research project funded by the European Research Council’s Consolidator Grant. Between 2024-2029, the project led by the Principal Investigator Sanjukta Sunderason and a team of doctoral and postdoctoral scholars will study how art can be used as archive to theorise plural, contesting notions of freedom from histories of 20th-century decolonization. The project will work at the interfaces of art, political thought, and historical archives of 20th-century decolonization.
We are housed in the Department of Arts and Culture, and the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis at the University of Amsterdam. The project is also affiliated with the university’s Research Priority Area, Decolonial Futures and meets regularly in the research group, Decolonial Meridians: Art and Thought from the Global South.
